Q: Wrong aspect ratio in browsermode, after import...

Hello there,

here's the dilemma:

after I import raw images in aperture, the preview images (Browser mode) seem to be off (not proportioned correctly). Once I go to  Viewer mode, they "scale" to normal. It takes about half a second. It seems as if something is added to top and bottom of the image, ie. more "info" comes in... the actual aspect ratio (?) doesn't change, but the added info makes it "right". And it actually is added to both "long sides of the image", not top and bottom. By that I mean that if the it is a portrait orientation, it's left and right of the image that changes.

This is not a problem if there were just few images. I could go and move from one image to next in Viewer mode, and wait for that half a sec every in between, but when it's hundreds of images... well, you understand, not fun.

The camera is Sony a-55. And I have tried to import both directly from camera and by using the card reader in iMac. Same problem both.

So your experiment with the second user account confirms that not the presets and preferences in your user account are to blame, and neither your Aperture library. Or did you change any of the default settings and copy the Aperture library to your new account?

 

I cannot tell from your video exactly what the problem is. If I get you right, you are mostly worried about the time needed to render the image in the viewer with the correct aspect ratio when you are browsing and switching between images.

 

What are your Import settings in the Import preferences panel?

Are you using Camera previews or Standard previews? It could be, that the Camera previews in the raw are having the wrong aspect ratio.

 

I'll be away from my mac for the rest of the day, but I hope, Frank and and Kirby will return to this thread, when it is daytime in the states.

    What is your Aperture version and MacOS version?

     

    Have you tried to any of the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics so far?

     

    If not, then it would be a good start to begin with removing the User Preferences from your User Library, for this looks like a GUI problem.

     

    Quit Aperture . Open the User LIbrary from the Finder's "Go" menu in the main menu bar (Click "Go" and hold down the options-key ⌥, until the Library is shown in the drop don menu).

    Then move the file

         Your home folder > Library > Preferences > com.apple.Aperture.plist

    to the Desktop and try again.

    If that does not help, try the oter measures, starting with repairing the Library.

    Ok, thanks Leonie for your answer,

    howerer it didn't work. I moved the plist-file to desktop and tried. Same problem. Moved it back.

    Also did the repair permissions and repair database phases in Aperture library first aid. No help.

    When testing I noticed that when still in import "mode" (ie. selecting the images to import) there were black bars in top and bottom... and when the images were actually imported and in some project, they were "scaled wrong".

    I also tested images from a different camera, and that showed me that this problem in fact is only with the Sony.

    This problem started about a month or two ago. I am pretty sure I would have noticed it before (about 10000 images imported).

    So there you go... any more ideas?

    Should I go ahead and do the "rebuild database"-option? Seems a bit harsh since this appears to be a camera specific problem...

    Does it only happen with your raw, or also when you import raw&jpeg and set the jpeg as master?

     

    If it is only the raw, check the raw presets. There may be a file in your User Library:

         Your Home Folder/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Raw Decode Presets.plist

     

    Move it to the Desktop after quitting Aperture.

     

    If you have the same problem with jpeg masters, try if the card is faulty (you excludedalready  the card reader) by using a different card or reformatting the card.

     

    Also, if it only the raw files, you may need to reinstall the raw support. I cannot check right now, if the raw support for your camera is part of the system or of Aperture, but as a last ressort reinstall Aperture.

    Ok, great job... and thanks again.

    Don't know why I didn't check with the jpegs earlier... now I did and they are fine, no problem.

    I moved the raw decode presets.plist to desktop, that made no difference.

    I reformat the card about once a week so that's propably not the problem.

     

    So, it's only raw files with the Sony. And I believe it's supported by aperture. When I think about it now, this problem might have started right about the time of the last major update of aperture. Does that mean something?

    Could you please tell me how can I reinstall raw support? That may be a good idea...

    Also, since you seem to know your way around, could you tell me how to reinstall (if need be) Aperture when it was originally purchased from App Store?

    Just jumping in to let you know that I don't see this problem with any of these Sony cameras (I only record RAW files):

    - a850

    - a900

    - a77

     

    The a77 came out near the time of the a55, but I don't know (and don't know how to find out) if the RAW format is identical.  (RAW formats vary by manufacturer and by camera model.)

    Alright, thank you as well,

    my problem started maybe a month (or two) ago.

    Files end with .ARW, that's about all I know.

    The camera itself was bought early '11.

    Thanks Kirby, for joyning us! Good to know, that this is not a general problem with Sony cameras.

     

    Teemu, I just checked, the raw support list says, that the a55 requires Aperture 3, so the raw support probably will be installed with the application.

     

    Separate raw support download installers are here: Each installer adds a few cameras - it is a bit tedious to look at all of them to find the one, that installs the support for your camera.

    I'd try first to reinstall Aperture. Since you bought from the App Store, you can download Aperture again, if you quit Aperture and remove it from the Applications folder to the Trash (don't empty the Trash); log off and on again. Then sign into the App Store and download the installer again - it should be available in the "purchases" tab and see, if reinstalling helps.

    Does it happen in a new empty library? If it does try making  new user and running Aperture as that user. Does the problem still occur?

    do I lose all the file struckture and adjustments and all when reinstalling?

    What steps do I have to make in order to that not happen ?

    All my images are referenced.

    Reinstalling Aperture will only replace the Aperture application; all your adjustments and edits, the projects and your albums, etc are part of your Aperture Library; the library will not be changed, when you reinstall Aperture.

     

    But look at Frank Caggiano's post first - he has a valid point with his suggestion, first to check, if the problem occurs with a new, empty library or in a different user account, since you so far only repaired your library but not yet tried to rebuild it.

     

    My bet was with reinstalling Aperture, because other posters reported that their raw problems were solved when they reinstalled Aperture after a Mt. Lion installation.

    Yes, I just now noticed Franks reply, thanks for that. Sorry to say that it also didn't help. I created a new library and imported jpg and raw from a card. Jpg was fine, raw rescaled in viewer mode... but thank you for it anyway.

    Leonie, I figured that you meant only the software, but I just had to check it before doing anything stupid. Really stupid.

    It's getting late here, I'll reinstall tomorrow and see what happens.

    Oh, but it did help considerably as a diagnostic measure:

    • By confirming, that you have the same problem with a new, empty library, we know now, that your Aperture library cannot be the reason for the wrong aspect ratio, so we do not need to bother to rebuild it.
    • And by confirming, that working from a different account still does not fix the problem, we can exclude any settings in your user library as the reason for the wrong aspect ratio.

    We have to look for system wide causes: The Aperture Application itself, any plug-ins you may have installed, kernel extensions, fonts, firmware updates, raw support, the system installation.

    I recommend making sure the firmware on the camera is up-to-date.
