OS X Mountion Lion !!!UPDATE!!!

I installed Lion on my 13'' MacBook Pro, and I experienced Negitive Things (compared to Snow Leopard):

# Slower startup times - Mountion Lion

# More processes mean the OS is using more RAM - Mountion Lion

# Macbook heats up to 60 - 65 degress - Mountian Lion

# Macbook now last to 4 or 4 and a half hours of battery - Mountion Lion

# Some applications occasionally freezing / Probably means program not yet supported by lion - Snow Leopard

# Faster startup times on the Snow Leopard when i did the challege with the Mountian Lion - Snow Leopard

# Less processes mean the OS is using less RAM - Snow Leopard

# Macbook heats up to 50 degrees - Snow Leopard

# Macbook lasted to 6 to 7 hours of battery - Snow Leopard

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion, I would like to possible downgrade?

Wait, are you saying that Mountain Lion consumes more battery life and runs hotter? Preposterous.

Edit: I tried to find the name of the process that's supposedly been contributing a lof of this but I can't find it and I'm tired. icalupdater maybe? Somebody else might know. Apparently killing that helps a lot. If you do a google search this is a huge issue and there's tons of speculation about it. You might be able to slightly reduce some of the symptoms, but if your machine is one of the ones negatively impacted you'll most likely have to wait for a fix or downgrade.

10.8 has got problems with the battery life, so wait an update

There actually are no confirmed battery problems with 10.8 that I'm aware of. There are some anecdotal reports, and some goofy "news" reports based only on those anecdotal reports, but the total number of problems is small compared to the number of users. Most likely, all the reported battery problems are either aging batteries or incompatible third-party software.

As Thomas pointed out, some are reporting that 10.8.1 will address some battery issues.

We won't know until it is actually released.

No confirmed reports? If by that you mean "Apple has not made a public statement", sure. But people posting detailed before and after statistics is generally a confirmed report.

Here is a confirmed report for you:

I bought this Macbook on August 1st. It came with Lion installed. For a week I used it with Lion and averaged about 7 hours to each charge. This is writing code, using the browser, and playing things in HBO Go. After a week I installed Mountain Lion. I then averaged 3-3.5 hours per charge doing the exact same things, without changing or installing any additional software, without changing anything. I then rolled back to Lion and had 7 hours again. I'm now on Mountain Lion, again, and have 3 hours.

It was my pleasure to confirm this report for you, please let me know if there are any other reports you need confirmed.

That is not a confirmed report, as you have not said anything about what software you're running or what troubleshooting steps you have taken. As is true of every other report of battery problems I've seen. "Confirmed" reports would consist of multiple people with similar hardware comparing before-and-after battery life with completely clean systems (ie, no personal data, settings or third-party software).

My own personal experience is that battery life is the same now as it was in Lion. I can fairly easily get 6 hours, while on wifi, doing just text editing, e-mail and web browsing, and with the screen dimmed a bit.

Of course, I won't say there's no possibility that there's a battery issue with certain specific hardware configurations. However, I've seen nothing so far that convinces me it's anything other than the usual post-upgrade problems.

Nothing additional is installed on the computer aside from Camino and Adium, and I have not used Adium yet. It is literally a brand new, completely stock system. All I have changed is the natural scrolling direction. So yes, it IS a "completely clean" system. If you're going to honestly sit here and tell me that it's not because I've changed a trackpad setting and installed a browser you're joking, I've played the stubborn game, I know you're the super internet tech wizard of the year, but it's a confirmed issue from multiple people and the fact that you disagree doesn't change that, sorry.

Edit: I'm naturally sarcastic and upon reading this I realized I came off like a jerk, which was not my intent, but it's frustrating to know there's an issue and have the people without one smugly say it doesn't exist. Assume for a second that you believe my system is literally two weeks old with nothing on it, and then tell me this is intended battery life with nothing but the browser open:

I have not experienced actual shortness of battery life on my Mid 2012 MBA. I HAVE experienced a battery meter that APPEARS to drain rapidly, but I'm still getting 6-7 hours out of the computer before I get my first low battery alert, and nearly another hour or so before the computer auto-sleeps.

The battery meter will drain to 35-40% in a few hours, but will hang there for a few more.

From my perspective, it appears to be a glitch with the battery meter.

Aug 22, 2012 11:36 AM in response to Anthony Tomasino

I've looked at the time remaining (which is only an estimate) and seen it at 3:30ish. Looked at it again 10 minutes later and it was back up to 6:30ish.

This may be why you can't currently display time remaining on the toolbar. It may be that Apple knows there's a glitch with the battery meter, and has disabled that particular feature until they get it worked out. Perhaps it wasn't a big enough issue to delay the release of the OS that is otherwise stable, at least on the current line of Macs.

It's based on an algorithm. It changes depending on use. If you're streaming a 1080p movie and have 3 hours left and then stop streaming, of course it may go up to 5 hours. It's based on the system load. I get 3 to 3 and a half hours with nothing running but the internet browser. As of my last test, my laptop went completely dead after 214 minutes (from 100%)

There are reports everywhere, but as mentioned, we have seen this before with no change from the update. Have 5 Macs and no battery issues on the 4 MBPs so may be random or model specific.
