I need to be able to specity which paper tray my iPads print to. In some cases we need to print to special paper in Bin 1, routine printing to Bin 2, and occasionally the manual paper tray. Is this possible to do, or do i really need to buy 3 separate printers?

no you don't need to buy three different printers!!!
save yhour pennies and get a third party app like print n share, which will let you print from the ipad and gives you printing options such as selecting a specific tray

I tried that application, but don't see anything in it that let's me choose other paper trays.

just had a look at my print n share app on the ipad. select your document, tap the printer icon on the top right and a new Print option box will open with all the print options, the paper tray option is at the bottom (I have attached a screenshot below) :
It will let you select any printer and any printer tray
i think you can contact the developers as well as far as i know they have good support

sort of. but i need to be able to print from within an app on the ipads and then send output to particular paper trays, so this still can't do the job for me.
I setup Printopia to create virtual printers, which worked, however, when i sent print jobs using printopia it leads to a 3/16 inch mis-alignment on the pages. Since i'm printing labels, this is a major problem. so no go.
Unless someone can propose another solution, i'm just going to get 3 Brother 5450DN printers and just use one for each type of paper. ridiculous, but seems to be the ony way.
