Question

Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to...

"The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required."

This is the message I receive, even though the ext. hard drive does have the proper format!

The funny thing is that the backup works great all day long - just not when my Mac is sleeping and PowerNap is on.

I understand that Apple officially does not support Time Machine on an Airport Extreme, but it should still work.

Any ideas?

I have the latest 5th gen Airport Extreme and a WD 2TB external USB 3.0 Hard Drive hooked up to it.

Retina MacBook Pro with EFI update running Mac OS 10.8.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mountain Lion

OK, so since I updated to 10.8.1 I no longer receive the error message and the backup works but only sporadically and not every hour. I will have to keep monitoring it...

http://pondini.org/TM/Airport.html You are never going to get advice that will guarantee success with this setup. You are on your own as long as you use the Airport Extreme. In all likelihood the backups are corrupt.

thanks for the heads-up but I have never had trouble with backing up with the Extreme in years and have set it up for many clients and friends. Same story there. Works flawlessly.
