I updated a iMac g4 from 10.3 to 10.3.9 (combo) now Safari bombs out.

I just got a imac g4. Had 10.3. I downloaded the combo updat to 10.3.9. When I try to use Safari, the home web page comes up. but when I type in a search item the program "unexpectedly quits"

Also, can update the Java. It has 1.4.1. Im' trying to install a program that needs Java 1.5,but the message says I need to instal the previous updat. Just can't find it anywhere on the web. [because of the first problem I need to search on another computer, pass the apps onto a flash drive... what a pain]

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are going to use 10.3.9 as the OS, the compatible version of Safari is VERY old. It is probably crashing because the web site is doing something unsupported by the old browser.

It is much older than other third-party web browsers that work with 10.3.9. One example is Camino. The version of Camino that works with 10.3.9 is not the latest version, but it is much more recent compared to the version of Safari you are trying to use.

Get version 1.6.11.

For Java, it is installed as part of the OS installation. The latest version available for 10.3.9 is the one installed by Software Update, which is probably this one (for the manual download)

If that is not 1.5 or later, you will probably need to upgrade the OS to Tiger, 10.4.11. or later (if supported on your Mac).

Thanks you for your speedy reply, it has helped me to understand the situatin and given me solutions/suggestions as what to do.

Regrding the Jave part, I was trying to install Jubler, the free app for creating subtitles. Jubler is looking for a the next step higher Java version than 10.3.9 has. I need to consider if I can get Tiger. Perhaps the Jubler specifications I read was about an earlier version of Jubler.

Thank you again for this valuable information.
