I've seen one virus introduced to my mac book pro recently. I was surfing a site for converting music from you tube over to MP3. It was disguised as an adobe flash player fix. Once downloaded I've been recieving requests to clean my mac, and notification my disc is full. A quick scan with a regular name anti virus, cleared the issue. Just be careful when surfing non apple sites. Just not worth the headaches.

well one sign is that your computer is slow and your documents are disappearing and in the top right corner is a weird bubble that says virus or virus detected make sure not to open any messages from people on an unknown site it can cause a virus just go to the store that you got it from and ask if you have a virus and they will check it out.

You don't have a virus. You believed a web site telling you to download a Flash player update, which did nothing of the kind. That's a Trojan. You had to download and install it.

Everything you've seen after that is adware generated by the garbage you installed. Download and run MalwareBytes for Mac. It will locate and offer to remove anything it finds. You can also use EtreCheck. It was initially designed as a tool to take a snapshot of your system so the results can be posted here. The author (etresoft, a long-time member of these forums) added the ability to detect and remove adware.

Neither app discloses or collects personal data. Nothing is removed until you say so.

Also, the only place to get Flash is directly from Adobe. Do not download it from any other site on the web. It won't be Flash. Same goes for Java. Download it only from Oracle.

You can't get something that doesn't exist. There has yet to be a true virus that can affect the Mac OS. Viruses copy themselves without any intervention from one computer to another. Almost to a one, the malware out there for Macs are Trojans. You have to allow it onto the system. Whether or not you knew you were doing is irrelevant. It still can't get there without your assistance.

Symptoms of malware vary, because all malware is different. Some malware exhibits no symptoms whatsoever.

The MacKeeper pop-up is most likely just an obnoxious pop-up ad on a web site you visited. If you quit Safari when it appeared, and now it keeps appearing every time you open Safari, that's because in Lion and Mountain Lion, Safari will (by default) try to re-load any sites that were open when it quit. So it's re-loading the site that caused that pop-up to appear. To fix that problem, simply hold down the shift key while starting Safari, to tell it not to load those pages. Then don't visit the site that generated the pop-up again.

If you have actually installed MacKeeper, see Clinton's post.

@Thomas,

Just a BTW - thanks for the info on your page about the new version of Flash Player: oddly enough, even though I have my preference pane set to download new versions of Flash when available, I (or Adobe) missed that one. Just another reason I visit your pages often - you keep them updated. Between you and James Pond, you have two of the best suggestions for Mac users on the 'net.

As always, thanks,

Clinton
