Nuisance--- admin password required for Onyx or Cocktail

I don't use an Admin password, but OS 10.74 requires a password, not a blank password, so run Cocktail or Onyx. I enjoy having no password, and no one else uses my laptop. It's a nuisance to add a password, run Cocktail or Onyx, then delete the password in Prefs. The authors of these two utilities assert that Apple requires a password, not the authors of these two fine utilities.

Anyone know a workaround so the password space can be blank ?

Nope. BOTH authors of those utilities insist that the MacOS requires a password, not a blank space. Yes, as an Admin one may have a blank password, but to run Cocktail or Onyx there must be a password, not a blank space. This is analogous to Terminal requiring a password, not a blank.

I cannot see any way out other than the time wasting procedure of perhaps using one or two characters as a password so you can use all these programs you wish to use. Surely it will not interupt your workflow too severly, given that you really don't need to be running those particular programs on too regular a basis anyway, it would be much more wasteful timewise than using a short password.

"That is what I said. Complain to Onyx and Cocktail developers at their feedback sites."

Silly to complain to them when both developers/authors blame Apple and the MacOS. http://www.titanium.free.fr/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1591 .

Apple should have a user option of having no password throughout the OS and apps, especially since even a child can reset it via DVD, boot partition, or system prefs.

According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1506:

Administrator accounts should not have a blank password

Administrator user accounts that have a blank password (that is, no characters at all for the password) will be unable to use sudo functions in Terminal.

So, using a blank password precludes using the sudo command, which, IIRC, both of those use when elevating to the root user to run. Quit being lazy and change the password to something meaningful.😉

Yep. I knew that. But that doesn't mean it's convenient or judicious or necessary. While Apple has made some improvements in Apps and OS, there is a growing list of issues.

Your specific issue is that you don't wish to have a password. That is fine, but do not expect everything to work in your favour just because of your decision to be lazy. Third Party Apps are NOT Apple's responsibility. It is up to them to keep up to date.

Unfortunately for you, it IS necessary to have a password to access Terminal.

If you believe that Apple should have a User Option for this, then tell them. We don't write the software.

Run that by the Onyx and Cocktail developers and I think you'll find they use elevated root user privileges and Unix commands to make them run properly. Whether convenient for you is another matter.

Separate from all the above, Apple should have a user preference which allows no password required at anytime for anything.

Well, they don't. Contact them through their feedback page and suggest it.

Just use a blank password anyway if you don't wish to access Terminal as you say, but as for all Third Party Programs such as Cocktail, Onyx etc. then you will need to contact them as to why they don't include a setting in their programs to accommodate you. That has nothing to do with Apple.

You have said your piece and been given advice which you do not wish to follow,so there is nothing else anyone can help you with here.

Petermac:

Perhaps you should read the links provided above. The authors of the two programs indicate that Apple's OS controls their program, and as such, a password is required. Thus the burden is back on Apple, so please stop indicating that this "has nothing to do with Apple".

The feedback link is mostly a joke and is an exercise in futility and placation. I have a list of 85 silly errors in the Mac OS and included apps. Two examples recently posted here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4226927?answerId=19368044022#19368044022 and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4236553?answerId=19371105022#19371105022

You have said your piece, and I've read the advice, but that does not preclude the need for software improvements. Never said I don't wish to follow. Only stated there shouldn't be the need.
