Sorry? I don't understand the comment. OSX works fine with a blank password, so the problem lies with the developers of the two fine utilities.

So does FileSalvage and other utilities. They want to make sure you have the authorization to run such programs. You also cannot have a null password in Snow Leopard or newer to run anything in Terminal that requires an admin password.

I cannot see any way out other than the time wasting procedure of perhaps using one or two characters as a password so you can use all these programs you wish to use. Surely it will not interupt your workflow too severly, given that you really don't need to be running those particular programs on too regular a basis anyway, it would be much more wasteful timewise than using a short password.

According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1506:

Administrator accounts should not have a blank password

Administrator user accounts that have a blank password (that is, no characters at all for the password) will be unable to use sudo functions in Terminal.

So, using a blank password precludes using the sudo command, which, IIRC, both of those use when elevating to the root user to run. Quit being lazy and change the password to something meaningful.😉

Yep. I knew that. But that doesn't mean it's convenient or judicious or necessary. While Apple has made some improvements in Apps and OS, there is a growing list of issues.

Your specific issue is that you don't wish to have a password. That is fine, but do not expect everything to work in your favour just because of your decision to be lazy. Third Party Apps are NOT Apple's responsibility. It is up to them to keep up to date.

Unfortunately for you, it IS necessary to have a password to access Terminal.

If you believe that Apple should have a User Option for this, then tell them. We don't write the software.

Yep. I knew that. But that doesn't mean it's convenient or judicious or necessary.

Run that by the Onyx and Cocktail developers and I think you'll find they use elevated root user privileges and Unix commands to make them run properly. Whether convenient for you is another matter.

So it would kill you to use a one letter password?

Just use a blank password anyway if you don't wish to access Terminal as you say, but as for all Third Party Programs such as Cocktail, Onyx etc. then you will need to contact them as to why they don't include a setting in their programs to accommodate you. That has nothing to do with Apple.

You have said your piece and been given advice which you do not wish to follow,so there is nothing else anyone can help you with here.
