Get an Intel MacBook or MacBook Pro. The Powerbooks haven't been made since 2006 and all software development essentially stopped shortly after. Much of today's programing has requirements that the PPC Macs can not provide.

If you are on a budget take a look at some ot the used models via LowEndMac under Notebooks/MacBooks.

Maxing out the RAM will help somewhat. What processor speed do you have? A slow (less than 1.25GHz) will result in slow video display.
