Aug 23, 2012 7:55 AM in response to moore76by noondaywitch,You buy the Snow Leopard retail DVD by calling Apple Phone Sales (1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for telesales).
Install that over your Leopard installation - the installer will only replace system files, leaving your applications, user data and preferences intact.
But you should make a bootable clone backup on an external HD before commecing the installation in case of problems/finger trouble.
Once installed, you're at 10.6.3. Update to 10.6.8 with the Combo installer (no need to do intermediate updates).
You will then have access to the App Store to purchase Mountain Lion if you wish (and if your computer is supported).
For Snow Leopard;
Note that 1GB RAM is the absolute minimum required - reasonable performance will be best expected with at least 2GB.
