OS 10.8.1 Network Utility » Invalid Connection
iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)
Try swapping cables. I've had a backup drive that myseriously ejected itself for about 2 years. Today, I moved the cable over to another machine to do some other backups and every time I put any kind of pressure on the cable with, say, an envelope, or by touching it, it loses connection. It was just a bad cable the whole time.
i've checked and replaced the cable.
i believe the issue is related to my network settings.
when creating a new location in syst pref » network » location » edit locations » +
the automatic ethernet settings work with network utility, and the connection status is ok.
perhaps i should just leave it as it is, but i want to understand what exactly does network location doesn't like in my custom settings.
i have basically 3 network locations:
off
ethernet
wi-fi
network utility's connection status indicates an invalid connection when i change from an active location (ethernet or wi-fi) to off - which is normal.
what doesn't work, is when i try to activate the ethernet or the wi-fi location back again, network utility does not seem to recognize the new location, and indicates an "invalid connection", with no transfer statistics - while i have an active internet connection.
off has all interfaces put to an inactive status
- bluetooth pan
- wi-fi
- fire-wire
- ethernet
- bluetooth dun
- vpn
- pppoe
- 6 to 4
ethernet has all of the above inactive except ethernet as an active interface.
the same goes for wi-fi, but the active interface is wi-fi.
the new automated ethernet location - that works with network utility - has these settings inactive
- bluetooth pan
- wi-fi
- fire-wire
- bluetooth dun
and ethernet is active.
i've checked my custom dns settings with the automated location and it works.
it's not the dns settings.
i'm thinking that my connection issue has to do with putting these interface inactive :
- vpn
- pppoe
- 6 to 4
what do you think ? does this make any sense ?
do i need these 3 interfaces active for a "valid" connection status in network utility ?
I also saw this error message recently, here's my solution:
Here's my “Automatic” network location settings and its order (you can find your service by clicking the cog icon - Set Service Order):
- PPPoE (Inactive)
- Wi-Fi
- iPhone USB
- Bluetooth PAN (Inactive)
- Thunderbolt Bridge
When I make PPPoE as inactive (My primary service), it shows “Invalid Connection”, if you enable it and not connect to your primary service it shows “Disconnected”. so the solution is:
- Remove your PPPoE service, or:
- Make sure your active service is the first service in Set Service Order dialog.
