Q: HELP WITH BACKUP AND SYNC

My mom can't have itunes with ubuntu. I plugged her phone into my computer so she could update to ios5. when i did this i wiped out all info on her phone(3gs) now she has a 4. If I back up her old phone and then sync the new one will this work?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1, HELP SO I DONT LOOSE ALL CONTACTS
