iMac sound not working

I have an iMac and the sound is not working. When I press the volume keys on the keyboard, the sound indicator flashes in the center of the screen. It appears the volume is turned to max, however right below that, a circle with a line drawn through it appears. (meaning sound is turned off) I've tried all of the volume keys at the top of the keyboard to no avail. I have multiple accts on this iMac, but it is the same on all accounts. Any ideas on a fix? Thanks for your help!

Try these two resets. The SMC will be most effective:

SMC RESET:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

PRAM Reset:

1- Ensure the machine is powered off.

2- Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:

‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’

3- Press the ‘power on’ button.

4- Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.

5- Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up normally
