New macs incompatible with some Ethernet switches?

We're having an issue in our office where none of us with Macs that are a year old or newer can connect to our main Ethernet switch board. We've had to put an intermediary 3 Com Gigabit switch in between the Ethernet wall plug and the new computers. Anyone heard of this? Is it a configuration problem? Hardware problem?

Any help/guesses welcome.

For awhile now, the copper port on these Macs come in Gigabit Ethernet, autopolarizing, autosensing. Thus they can span the gamut from traditional 10mbit half-duplex Ethernet to 1gbit full-duplex Gigabit Ethernet. However, sometimes the port negotiation goes awry, especially when new standards get put in place and older equipment fall behind.

Have you tried forcing a fixed configuration vs. autonegotiation? System Preferences / Network / Ethernet / Advanced... / Hardware, and fiddle around with the settings?
