Welcome to Apple Communities
Open System Preferences > Dictation and Speech and activate Dictation. Then, you can select the key you want to turn on Dictation
In System Preferences ditation is turned on. also to turn it on i have selected hit fn twice before and after your speach and thats what i do.
In the application you're now, go to Edit > Start Dictation. If it hasn't got this, Dictation isn't compatible with this app. Also, open Finder, press Option key, select Go > Library, open Preferences and delete com.apple.assistant.plist
Do you have a window open that accepts text input such as a browser, Text edit or Pages? With the cursor ready and linking?
i deleted the com.apple.assistant.plist and it still doesnt work when i actavate ditation, talk, and end it has three dots it thinks about it and then shakes and then closes
i opened text edit and tried ditation and had the three dots like it was thinking and then shaked and didnt write anything down. i had the mouse clicked on the page and had the cursor ready like it was going to type but nothing i can use the keybord just fine
Do you have an active Internet connection when you try this?
is there any setting that i may have set that doesnt allow dictation to work? doesnt it send what i say to apple and they convert it to text? could i have a setting that keeps it from going to apple?
yes my internet connection is strong
Do you use a proxy?
by the way what was that com.apple.assistant thing you had me delete do? it is good that i deleted it right?
It's Dictation file
how can i tell if i use a proxy cause im not sure. i dont think i use one.
My last idea: do you have the internal mic chosen as input in the system preferences sound pref pane?
yes the internal mic is selected. also i found this but do not know how to do what it says to do.
I enabled dictation on my mac through the System Preferences. First I tried going to notes and pressed the fn key twice, the Siri like mic appeared and I began to say simple words such us "hello" "how are you" and pressed done. The thre dots appeared for a few seconds then the 'three dots' went left to right and nothing appeared. I've tried this on notes, microsoft word, and also while typing this discussion. Any ideas?

I had called the Apple Helpline a few days back and after an unsuccessful troubleshooting the problem was bumped to someone who said was from the engineering team. After another few rounds of trouble shooting he called me back and asked me to add the following DNS entries
1. 208.67.220.220 and
2. 208.67.222.222
and restart my machine. After these changes; the Dictation on my iMac is working.
PS:Previously I was having the Google DNS entries which now I have removed.
Hope this helps others.
