I successfully installed 10.8.1 over the top of 10.8.0 using the complete 10.8.1 installer (rather than the updater which always produced 'Installation Failed' messages for me).

I then tried installing the HewlettPackard Printer Drivers updater (downloaded from http://support.apple.com/downloads/#osxmountainlion) but I get the same 'Installation Failed' message as I got with the 10.8.1 updater.

It makes me wonder if this 'Failed' message can be safely ignored - and the installations are actually being successful. But then, maybe not... !!

I have done some testing on an external HD so not to screw up my mac. The only app so far which causes the install error message is VirusBarrier X 10.6.18 if it is active I get the error on any install of an update. I also have Little Snitch preview 3 (3864) with this active no error messages.

I have sent a message to intego regarding the problem and awaiting a response as it has only happened since 10.8.1 for me.

I am also wondering if there maybe an unerlying issue within the 10.8.1 update itself to some extent.

Hopefully a fix will appear soon as it is rather annoying to see the error.

If I get any more info I will post it here to help others

I installed the whole 10.8.1 thing. No errors. But still there are some problems in the system

ERROR]<CPPathUtils.c:526>The device-file for this operating system, 'osx-12.1.0.xml', was not found. An attempt to revert to a previous revision of the OS device-file: 'osx-12.0.0.xml' has been made. Please file a Radar report with Apple, on the 'CoreProfile' component, version 'X'.

This happens when I purge the memory

Started to get slowdowns on the MBA with ML and the Console logs showed repeated error messages 'kernel: macx swapoff failed'. Booted from a backup to run Disk Utility but couldn't restart from the internal drive because of 'building boot caches' errors. So I erased the drive and did a clean install of ML. I did not transfer back Applications or Files and Folders in the Setup Assistant.

Everything seems OK now - the HewlettPackard drivers update installed successfully.

I originally installed ML with Lion in place (because I had successfully installed Lion with SL in place). It didn't work this time but it was worth a try.
