Hashtag and euro symbols? Alt 3 and 2 don't work

Anyone know how to get a hashtag and euro symbols on an imac keyboard in the UK. I've spent 90 minutes looking all over the net and only get the answer Alt +3 for a hashtag and Alt +2 for the Euro symbol but neither work. I can get lots of other symbols using the alt keys so I know they are working, e.g. ¡∞§¶•ªº, but not the hashtag and euro.

Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Should be alt+2 for € and alt+3 for #. If that's not what you're getting, go to

System Preferences > Language and Text > Input Sources tab.

Top of the left column, tick (check) "Keyboard and Character Viewer", Bottom of window next to search field, tick "Show input menu in menu bar"

System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard tab; tick "show keyboard and character viewers in menu bar"

Open Keyboard Viewer and hold down alt to find the symbols.

Some may need shift+alt.

If they're not where they should be, check the right keyboard is selected in Language and Text > Input Sources.

< Note that these instructions are for Snow Leopard - I see no reason why Lion should be different, but I'm sure someone will chip in if it is >
