Aperture is automatically adjusting the colors of my Nikon D800 RAW files

I have a new Nikon D800 and shot my first RAW shoot this week. The photos looked exactly how I wanted them on the camera and also when I imported them into Aperture. After import, I click on any of the photos and Aperture changes the photos. They are darker and more contrasty. I can't figure out how to stop this. I've seen other threads about this, but no real solutions. My present when importing is to not auto adjust. Does this mean I just need to use a different program?

This comes up all the time with users new to RAW processing. The image in the camera viewer and the image you see when first importing into Aperture is the JPG preview. The settings in the camera at the time the shoot was taken affect how this image looks.

The RAW file is just that, the RAW data unaffected by (most) of the camera settings. The RAW conversion program uses a combination of science and art to convert the image into a viewable format. The art part is why different conversion programs will display the same image differently.

The assumption, if your shooting RAW is that you will be adjusting the image post shoot to achieve the results you want. If the JPG image from the camera suits your needs then there is no real reason to shoot RAW just shoot JPG and use the image from the camera,

Please see this message the those following for a short discussion of what RAW is and what to expect when you record your sensor data to a RAW file and import that RAW file into Aperture.

The problem _may_ encompose more than "how RAW works" -- but it important to first clarify that your problem isn't simply due to a misunderstanding of what RAW is.
