Q: iPad to iPhone tether

I have an iphone4 and I am going to buy an ipad, I was going to buy the ipad 3 3G and 'tether' my ipad to my iphone. Do I need to buy the ipad 3G + cellular?  Do I need cellular if I'm not going to use it as a phone but tether it to my current phone contract?

If you don't want to use 3G/4G directly on the iPad, then the wifi-only iPad will suffice - if your iPhone carrier supports it then you can use the iPhone's personal hotspot function to share its internet access with the iPad (the iPad will see the iPhone as a wifi network, you don't need built-in 3G/4G on the iPad). Also, even if you get a 3G iPad then it won't give you 'normal' phone capability on the iPad, it will just give you the ability to use 3G/4G as data networks (e.g. for Safari, Mail etc when you are away from a wifi-network) - the 3G/4G iPads also have a built-in GPS chip which the wifi-only models don't have..
