Appleworks gone -- where to get 6.2.8?

I'm looking for help for an older friend running an iMac still on OS 9. She lost her AppleWorks too. Someone else set her up with 6.0.2 and recommended that she get the latest version. When I visited http://www.apple.com/appleworks/update/, I found that AW 6.2.8 is the recommendation for OS 8-9. I clicked on that button to download it, but received 6.2.9 instead. The Update Web page specifically says that 6.2.9 is for OSX 10.1 and above.

Where next?

You can getet the Updater from here:

<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120213>

But it's probably the same as the one you've already downloaded.

The Updater will update both versions 6.2.8 and 6.2.9. When you update a copy of AppleWorks 6 it is changed so that it includes both versions 6.2.8 and 6.2.9.

Note that the Finder state you have AppleWorks 6.2.8 when you're using Mac OS 9/Classic. But if you're using Mac OS X then the Finder will tell you that the very same program is version 6.2.9.

Also, you don't have to worry about choosing which version to use. The Finder will pick the right version for you. When you're using Mac OS 9/Classic it will always start version 6.2.8 auatomatically when you double-click the AppleWorks 6 icon. Similarly, when you're using Mac OS X, the Finder will always start version 6.2.9 when you double-click the AppleWorks 6 icon.

I know this is unusual so please reply if you'd like to clarify what I've written.

Cheers.

Thanks, Dale. I hope to see my friend next week and try the updater on her computer.

What you say is no more unusual than Adobe's Photoshop 7 back when OSX first came out. If you installed on OS 9, it installed the OS 9 version; when you updated to OSX, it ran in Classic mode until you reinstalled, when you got the version which ran under OSX. So, I think that I'm with you!

I'll report back,
Ann

Dale, I wonder if you can help me. Please see my posting about updating AW6.2, (as of 4/8/06) and my further posting about having lost AW6.2 when I thought I was updating to 6.2.9. Now all I have is 6. I have a folder full of things that are labeled 6.2.9, but they seem not too do anything. What have I done wrong?
Thanks in advance for looking at all this for me. Sally (saft)

I've tried running the update on my friend's iMac, which currently has AW 6.1.2. As I go, I note that the updater says that it is going to install the latest updates for both OS 8-9 and OSX. So far, so good. Then, when we hit the Update button, the error message says, "The updater was unable to find an installation of the US AppleWork 6 program to update in the specified Update Location. Please select a different Update Location that contains an installation of the US AppleWorks 6 or install AppleWorks 6 from your orig"

I've reinstalled AW and my friend has a working copy of AW 6.1.2. Where are we going wrong now?

Later this evening, I'll try searching for this error message in other posts. Please forgive me if it has been dealt with somewhere else already. Just reporting back to you on the installation experience as promised some days ago!

The Updater you've downloaded is for the "English" version of AppleWorks 6 (ie North American English). You're an Australian like me so you need to download the International English version. You can get it from Apple's UK web site:

<http://www.apple.com/uk/appleworks/update/>

NB Apple obviously think Americans speak "English" and the rest of us including the UK speak some sort of variation called "International English"! A strange interpretation of history that catches out lots of International English users downloading AppleWorks.

Welcome to Apple Discussions

Is AppleWorks completely missing from your hard drive or are you trying to update the AppleWorks you have & the updater gives that message? I'm going to guess that it is missing, meaning it has been deleted. Unfortunately, you haven't said what model of iMac you have to give you specific directions to reinstall AppleWorks. There have been many different models of iMacs & four distinctly different processors - G3, G4, G5 & Intel Core Duo. I'll give you a couple of links that might help, but you need to give more information if they don't.
Knowledge Base article 300316 on installing AppleWorks 6 & Knowledge Base article 61802 on restoring the software than came with your Mac.
