Q: Using Phone Locator

If the phone location feature on my phone is active and engaged, but the battery dies, how is this beneficial? Is there some reserve power or some sort of back-up to locate a lost or stolen phone?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

If the battery dies, or the phone is off, or wiped, or unable to connect to a network, it cannot be located.

Let me understand this more clearly. If my phone is lost or stolen, someone can either shut the phone off, or disengage the battery and I'm S.O.L. ? Are there any other ways of tracking the phone? If not, then the location device is not worth all the hype.

What you've said is correct. It's not done by magic (unfortunately) - the phone has to be able to detect and calculate it position and transmit it over a network to you. It's not really pitched as a means of finding stolen phones, more misplaced ones.
