Copying is not copying

I am using Mac OSX 10.8.1 Upgraded from 10.8.0 from 10.6.8 and copying is not working. I have not switched the modifier keys and yet when I click CMD + C COPYING IS NOT COPYING this is really annoying so please help

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1)
