How can I temporarily remove music (by Genre) from my iPhone but not iTunes?

Hello all,

How can I temporarily remove music by Genre ("Christmas" for example) from my iPhone 4S but not iTunes v10.6.3.25?

I have tried...

In iTunes, I selected Summary/Options/"Sync only checked songs and videos". Then I deselected all Christmas genres in Music/Genres/. After Syncing, these albums are still on my iPhone. I have also tried deselecting the specific albums from Music/Albums/, but this does not work either.

Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for your assist.

If the songs are still checked this will override unchecking the genre. Try unchecking the actual songs, then syncing.

Unchecking the individual songs from the iTunes music library does indeed remove the songs from my iPhone. However, this is quite tedious given the number of albums I want to remove. Isn't this supposed to be easier done by "unchecking" the Genre or the specific Album using the Devices/My iPhone/Music tab?

Does this work for you (or anyone else)? My aim is to identify the most efficient method of doing this.

One way to do it efficiently is to put the genre in the iTunes search box to locate all the matching songs, then select all the matching songs at once with your mouse, right-click and select "uncheck selection".

Searching then group deselecting was an excellent suggestion, randers4. It was easy to find and alter all songs sync status very quickly. Thanks.

Still, I have to wonder...why have the options on the Devices/My iPhone/Music tab in the first place? Does this not work for you either? randers4? Anyone?

I don't use this option so I'm not sure but you may have to deselect "sync only checked songs and videos" for it to work as desired. I know that if this setting is checked, then your checked song selections will take precedence playlists, artists, albums and genres selections.

Understood, and I agree. But, it doesn't appear to work. I deselected "sync only checked songs and videos", and then deselected either the Genre or Albums (on different occasions, and also tried at the same time) in the Devices/My iPhone/Music tab. I deduced that this was simply an alternate method of managing my libraries. Unfortunately, it simply has no observable effect. For now, your previous method will suffice nicely.

Indeed another work around option. I appreciate the suggestion, Keith. However, having a solid workable solution in hand (thanks to randers4), I'm mainly interested in an answer to why the options in iTunes/Devices/My iPhone/Music do not appear to work as one might think.
