Q: Switching between desktops in mountain lion using trackpad not working...?

My early-2011 2,7 GHz Intel Core i7 13" MacBook Pro is running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, and several times a day when I go to switch between full screen apps/desktops using the four fingered swipe to the left or right, nothing happens. Mission control (four fingers up) doesn't work either--yet the trackpad works to scroll, move the mouse, tap, and click. Anything using more than two fingers doesn't do anything. If I want to switch, I have to use the icons in the dock (finder to get to my desktop, Safari to switch back to my fullscreen browsing window, etc.). The only way I've seen to fix this is shutting down. Is this a hardware or software problem and what can I do to remedy it.

It's also worth nothing that when this happens, mission control does not work at all. The keyboard button (F3) or the dock icon does not activate it. Addtionally, I'm pretty sure I had this issue when I was running 10.7 so it doesn't seem like it could be a bug in 10.8.
