The APE is also a Router. Replace you old Router with the APE.

Never used one of them so I'm not sure but you may be able to set it up as a Second WiFi system and use it as a port for your external drive. you do that by Wiring it to your original router and not using the WAN/Internet port on the APE. Then, and more then likely first, you have to turn off the DHCP server in the APE and set it up with a different SSID name then your old router. If you can't Wire it to your old router then you will need to replace the old router with the APE to get it all working. To my knowledge the APE can't be used as a WiFi Extender and or connect to your original network wirelessly.

then it is not going to work for you unless you WIRE it to the older Router. IE Run an Ethernet cable from the old router to where the APE is going to be. That is your only option.

Yes but you need to run a wire from old to new.

You could set the APE up as a Stand Alone WiFi system but then you would not have internet access through it. Only access to whatever is connected to it.

And No you can have the Mac connect to both system at the same time.
