Ipod nano has a white and black screen

My ipod nano 6th generation decided to go crazy on me and has a blank white screen when I hold down the sleep/wake button and a black screen when I reset it holding the sleep/wake button and the minus volume button. I have windows vista, the ipod appears in my computer but does not appear in iTunes so I am unable to restore it.
