iPhone displays the company name when I text not my label I have assigned to a particular number.

E.g. I have the company I work for and I have 5-10 different people with their own label.

This label appears when I call or they call me, but does not appear in the messages.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

That does clarify, thanks. You're talking about incoming messages not having the sender precisely defined.

My guess is this is related to contacts. Do you have Bill, Lisa, and/or Company in your contacts? The iPhone will try to make a correlation if you do.

If not, might Bill and Lisa be sending you texts from the same (company) phone number?

IPhone is not jailbroken. The calling and receiving calls works fine.

The iPhone just does not distinguish between different labels when messaging.

E.g I call "Bill" from "company name" and his label of "Bill" ( not iPhone/mobile/home the iPhone default labels) appears on my screen so I know it's bill from the company name. But if "bill" and "Lisa" message me the text says its from "company name" not the individual label.

Hopefully this clarifies a bit.

***** really that apple give you the option then doesnt display it correctly imo.

i would not like to seperate due to my work i probably have about 15 different companies that are categorized like this and it makes it 1000X easier to find the person to call as i might have 3 different Steve's in three different companies.

unfortunately i guess ill just have to filter through it every time to see who it is.

When in a message if you hit contact info > it will highlight the lable "steve" in blue, so i can see who messaged me just makes it time consuming and rather pointless to have labels if they dont work properly.

I sort of understand. Here's a situation that may help:

Suppose you have two folks in your contacts list who happen to be married and living in the same house. One is named "Husband" and the other "Wife". Assume they have the same phone number.

Now assume you receive a call from that number on your iPhone. The iPhone will identify the caller as "Husband and Wife". ("Husband is first because they're shown alphabetically.)

I hope this analogy helps.

iPhone displays the company name when I text not my label I have assigned to a particular number.
