iPad mirroring to 720p projector much smaller than it used to be

I've been using an iPad 2 and 720p projector for 1 year in a classroom situation. Originally used a dongle to from iPad to HDMI to carry picture directly to projector. Mirrored picture filled the screen.

Once iOS 5 came out, I was able to do mirroring with the same results through the Apple TV. As updates came out for Apple TV and iPad 2 I faithfully installed them. I am now down to the mirrored picture taking up about 60 - 70% of the screen whether through Apple TV or the dongle. This tells me that it's the iPad updates causing the problem. Am I correct?

Is it even possible to roll back to earlier iOS versions on the iPad and see if that corrects the issue?

I have read previous posts on this issue and have tried all the suggestions of manully setting Apple TV output. I cannot find any such settings on the iPad. Do they exist? Maybe this would help.

Any other ideas?

Mirroring never has filled the screen. It's simply not possible, the iPad has a screen resolution of 4:3, the TV a screen resolution of 16:9.

The projector is 4:3 and I'm in from all edges. Didn't used to be.

If the projector is 4:3 then what you are seeing a 4:3 image from your iPad being fit into a 16:9 screen (because that's the aspect ratio of the Apple TV), then being fit into a 4:3 screen again (a dounble misfit, if you will)

This is how it has always worked, I suspect you have been using basic AirPlay previously, which doesn't send the screen of the iPad, but the content itself.

This is not the way it always has been for me. Before iOS 5 it fit the full screen when directly output from the iPad. After iOS 5 it was shrunk slighly but tolerable. As each update came out it shrunk more.

I have the same size issue when directly hooking to the iPad, bypassing the Apple TV.

I'm unable to offer any further advice, fitting a 4:3 image onto a 16:9 output to a 4:3 is never going to fit.

If you are watching a 16:9 movie on your iPad, you can either watch it with black bars at the top or zoom and crop the edges off. If you are mirroring the iPad to your TV, you will see exactly what is on the screen but in the centre with black bars either side.
