Which Booq bag fits the MBP? Find out here.

I've spent an extraordinary amount of time trying to find just the ideal bag for my MacBook Pro. There are many PowerBook bags out there, and many product sites indicated that this or that bag will work well with the MBP. I finally decided the what I wanted was:

the <a href"http://www.booqbags.com/Search.bok?category=sleeves&keyword=powersleeve">B ooq PowerSleeve

...but which? A handful of them indicate that they work well with the MacBook Pro, but they are of different sizes. Some are new and some are discontinued, but still listed on the site.

I called Booq and inquired into this. I wanted to post what I found as far as which vertically oriented bag (this orientation just makes sense) is the most exact fit for the MacBook Pro. The helpful young woman on the phone was able to immediately indicate which I needed, having told her what I was looking for. The answer:

The PowerSleeve XM is apparently an exact-fit bag. No extra space in the laptop compartment - it's a very close fit.

I wanted to post that for anyone pondering the same question. I'll give a report once the bag arrives. Ordered it yesterday.

Well, I returned the Powersleeve XM I bought last week. It fit, but a little too tight for me. I wouldn't mind such a tight fit if the case had thicker padding. It seems to me that the case would just transfer vibrations to the MBP. And once I put the power adaptor into its pocket and closed the lid, it seemed to me that it would just apply continuous pressure the MBP's case. I wasn't sure if that would case the keyboard to press against and damage the screen, since there's not much padding. I think the case would disfigure over time as well. But the real deal-breaker for me was the way the MBP is exposed for about 1 inch at the top of the Powersleeve. Just seemed like an open invitation for rain, snow or even dust to enter. To me, it was too big to carry inside a backpack or whatever.

Fortunately, Jeff at www.pivotgear.com was kind enough to allow me to return it and even refunded me the same morning he received it back. He also took my concerns seriously enough to remove the XM from the list of MBP-fit cases on their site (they sell Booq, Brenthaven and Crumpler products).

I was extremely disappointed that the XM didn't work out, it's quite attractive - looks just like the photos on their website. It may work for others, depending on their needs.

Peter K.,

Allow me to explain the fit issue I had. I'm referring moreso to the overall fit once you close and fasten the cover, not so much as the fit while sliding the MBP into the case. The cover didn't evenly pull over the end of the MBP. It bended over it, kind of like closing an overstuffed cardboard box. I got the impression that over time the lid would bend out of shape. If you look closely at the first Powersleeve XM picture on the Booq website, you can see a slight bulge at the top where the lid covers the edge of a laptop (which is exposed as I mentioned).

Believe me, I scoured the Net for the all the MBP-compatible cases I could find, in any price range. I kept coming back to Booq, but the Powersleeve "L" which was the first Powersleeve I'd seen Booq advertise for MBP was on backorder. Noticing there wasn't much difference in specified measurements between the "L" and the "XM" I ordered the XM because it was in stock. Today, in the description I just noticed they added the statement "*Tight vertical fit with 15.4" MacBook Pro. PowerSleeve L offers slightly more room."

I really liked the Booq' design and quality finish, but in the long run I realized I need to feel my $2000 investment was being protected. That gap at the top of the case settled it for me. Here in the Windy City, you never know what may blow your way.

Hi TSP,

I'm soooo embarrassed! I just checked my receipt and I have the PowerSleeve M. Stupid me. The Booq site, lists this bag as fitting both the 15" PB and the MBP. Sorry for that!
