mail app freezes

My mail app is frozen. When I place the cursor in the mail window a spinning multicolor wheel appears and it won't let me click on anything in the box. Also, there are "spinning wheel icons" (grey) next to all maiboxes in the inbox including icloud. Any suggestions?
