How to password protect applications on Mac?

Is there a way to add password protection to individual applications? I know there are paid apps available for this, but are there any free ways?

michele62-

The many solutions posted above SHOULD solve the problem you are having, but it is clear that you either have not provided enough background information or do not understand those solutions.

This old thread has gotten a little too snippy to be kind to you. You should start a new topic, and give it a name to attract Readers who can talk constructively about your issues. be sure to include as much background information as possible.

Hey Network 23 You said, " it is easy to lock them out of your iMessage texts but harder to lock them out of the iMessage application."

How does one lock others out of their iMessage Texts? That is exactly what I've been looking to do! Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks

Hi michele62, sorry I missed your message earlier. When I mentioned locking others out of your iMessage texts, I was referring to my earlier posts in this thread that strongly agree with the idea of walling off your data from others simply using the User Accounts built into the system. If you make sure that (1) you are the only person who knows your OS X account username and password, and (2) when you let anyone else borrow your Mac, you make them use their own separate OS X login account (non-admin) or use the Guest account, then it will just work the way you want. The system does not allow users to enter the user folder of other user accounts on a Mac, and since the iMessage texts are inside the user folder of one's account, nobody can see others' messages as long as each user can only have access to their own OS X account.

People in the thread keep looking for ways to protect this application's data or that application's data, but it isn't necessary. As long as each user can only use their own account, they're not gonna get into any data in any other account anyway. Using separate accounts makes sure that data in all applications is kept private per user. The only way people are gonna see all your stuff is is you let people borrow your Mac when you are logged into your own account, so I never do that.

Me too. I really don't think this question is stupid. I have an open computer meaning anyone in my family can use it. I also let my friend borrow it if they need to. I guess some people don't trust friends but we let each other borrow things and have full trust or they would not be my friends and family. I only have one user with no password because I don't want one. But I wish there were a way to password protect an application. It would only be for 1 or 2 and since I don't have different users the files vs. programs wouldn't be an issue here. I know I can put them in a new password protected folder but I wish there was another option. If it was there people wouldn't have to use it. But it would be useful for some people like me.

Also wondering the same thing. I don't think it's a bad question, I think it would be a really great feature. I love how my iPhone syncs with my iMac, which is password protected (some people have the pw) however I don't like that someone can click "messages" and see what I'm typing on my phone. It's nice when I'm on the computer, but I don't need anyone stumbling upon messages on my iMac and reading every text conversation and picture message I have. Just kind of an invasion of privacy.
