I'm having a problem upgrading my iPhoto 5 library to IPhoto 11

I just bought a new Mac Mini. The One to One person transferred my files from my old Mini that used iPhot 5. I clicked on IPhot and was told to use IPhoto Library Upgrader which I did. I clicked in Upgrader, it ran for a new seconds and then I got the messeage back that I had to upgrade. And the program quit on me. So I can't access my photos. I also don't understand why the person transferring my files and upgrading my machine wouoldn't have done that to begin with. How do I get to use iPhoto 11. I did check. My old machine used iPhoto 5 so yes I need the Upgrader.
