Ok, so I got the sky gamblers game from the mac app store. Loaded it up, and it opens up the game center app. So it says sign into game center with my apple ID, I use the same ID as I got for the mac app store, then it lets me agree to the terms, then choose a nickname, and then it gets stuck on "saving" - and I can't even play sky gamblers until I get this game center junk working!
After some searching, I figured this one out. You need to set up your nickname on an iOS device (iphone or ipad) first, then the OS X version will work.

Found the problem. I logged into the Manage My Apple ID section at https://appleid.apple.com/ and realised that my email address had not yet been verified. Sent the verification email again, verified the email address and now all is working in Game Center.
