apple tv will connect to network but not internet

Try restarting your router, that may help.

I have unplugged the apple TV but it still says noat connected. However, it has accessed some movies but when I try to purchase or download from say netflix, it cannot.

Have you checked your routers 'Managed devices" and made sure your Apple TV's MAC address isn't blocked? This happened to me due to too many invalid connections and took me a day to realize. Deleted the ATV MAC from the blocked list and problem solved.
