thunderbolt display won't wake up!

I bought the first version of the MBP Retina and I'm loving it! So what better companion to use than the 27" Thunderbolt Display...

So I've been using it since the first day I got my MBP Retina. Everyday when I leave work, I log-out from my computer, and when I get in in the morning, I just move my mouse and both my displays wake up. This has never been a problem until this morning.

I have tried unplugging the power, doing a power cycle, disconnecting all USB devices from the Thunderbolt, etc. Nothing works.

Does anyone have an idea?

For me the recent Firmware update for the TB-Display seems to have worked. I was also having problems with my hd at the time and had to replace it, necessitating a complete reinstall. So no definitive answer but now the problem is completely gone.

PS.: Now my TimeMachine drive won't disconnect, hanging up the finder :-((( You win some, you lose some.

We had this problem with a Thunderbolt Display. It turned out to be the built in Thunderbolt cable. I used a different Thunderbolt cable, plugged it into the Thunderbolt port on the back of the monitor and it works fine. I thought the idea of having a built in cable was strange in the first place....

Our monitor is still under warranty so Apple care said that if I take it to the Apple Store they will repair or replace the monitor. If yours is out of warranty another cable would be a good cheap fix.

Hope this helps somebody.

Yeah you're right, I'm up to my third display which Apple were happy to change and it works fine, no problems at all. Both previous models had warped Thunderbolt cables. I tried all the troubleshooting steps here numerous times, save yourself the headache and get a new cable! I think it must be a design flaw as they have been pretty hush-hush, admittedly they gave me excellent service and credit so can't complain.

Great display through, I hope it lasts like all my other Mac products.

I have followed the instructions for resetting NVRAM and PRAM for many months now and the issue seems to be getting worse. BethinTulsa, I'm going to try your suggestion and purchase a Thunderbolt cable, disconnect the built in cable and see how the separate cable works. THANKS for the suggestion.

FYI: I have a Mac Mini Mid 2011 with a 27" Thunderbolt also purchased in 2011. I'm using OS x 10.9.

I'm using a new thunderbolt display on a 2012 mbp 13in and having the same problems. Also running Mavericks, but I didn't have the monitor before Mavericks, so I have no idea if it's related.

Had some weird artifact/noise on screen, so I returned to monitor for a replacement. The second one seemed better, but over the last couple of weeks it's sometimes not waking up without unplugging/replugging. Sometimes the charge part of the cable has to be unplugged/replugged several times before it starts charging.

I bought it at Best Buy and I'm not sure if they're replace it for me again. The manager said if I had the same problem with the replacement, I'd need to bring my laptop in for testing too, etc.

Not sure if I want to hassle with all this troubleshooting with a brand new, overly-expensive monitor, and considering just returning for a refund. Trouble is, I really love the monitor and the built-in hub. Though, I think building that cable into the montitor was really dumb, since that's where I suspect the problem is.

An idea: I think the problem is actuall due to the hard-drive going to sleep, which disconnects the monitor, rather than the screen going to sleep. I'm not sure what the technical difference is between "computer sleep" and "display sleep", but I turned "computer sleep" up to two hours (Under System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter) and unclicked "Put hard disks to sleep when possible." I haven't had any trouble since.

I've been having this problem for several months now and was very worried because I was getting error messages due to disconnecting from my backup disk every time I left my desk for more than 30 minutes or so, and I had to unplug and replug in the monitor.

I'll repost this on other similar threads and see if this is helpful for anyone else.

I called tech support and they had me shut down, hold down option key to select starting up in recovery mode, then checked disk. There were some errors so I repaired. Then, checked diskpermissions and repaired those too.

The tech wasn't all that sure that would solve it, but it's been a week and I haven't had the problem again. Only, sometimes I have to plug/replug the power cable to get it to light up.

I'm not certain my issues have been solved, but so far so good.

I'd already repaired permissions with no effect, only I didn't shut down and restart in recovery mode to run disk utility from there.

Hi all,

Did anyone of you try to look at the "About this Mac › More info › System Report" information?

In my case the Mac Pro does not see any monitor (to check this I had to plug in a HDMI projector) nor does it see any Thunderbolt peripherals at all.

This tells me 2 things : the Mac does acknowledge the Thunderbolt ports (which is good news) and the problem comes from the monitor, not the Mac.

Am I right?

I also plugged the Thunderbolt monitor to a recent iMac and it still didn't wake (so I guess the PRAM is not the problem here either).

So to me the problem would either be the power (nothing tells me the screen is actually on) or the "built-in" Thunderbolt cable.

Sorry about my English (I'm not a native speaker).

I started having a similar problem today. But I am in an office with many Thunderbolt displays, and NONE of them wake up when I plug in my Macbook Pro. SO, don't be too quick to blame your display.

My symptoms: Laptop screen is fine. I plug in TB, nothing happens. I unplug TB, MBP screen blinks black and comes back (like it thought displays changed). Sometimes after messing with this plugging and unplugging, I try to restart, and NEITHER screen comes on. So I close my MBP, open it again, MBP screen comes on. TB still nothing.

So I knows its my MacBook. I've reset PRAM and SMC (I think. Not sure how to verify the latter.) Still looking for answer.

Nicho - did you get it to work properly?

In my case I tried to install the thunderboltdisplay update v.1.2 - but it will not install since it can't detect any thunderbolt displays.

My cinema 27" display is just black and no matter what I do, the mbp (retina 13", medio 2014) will not detect the display.

I have tried all the guides proposed in this thread, and they only work momentarily.

Anyone with any bright suggestions?

Thanks @ShrallSeb

Similar problem, Thunderbolt Display would not wake from sleep. Power was being sent to the MacBook Pro (15" retina 2014, Yosemite 10.10.3) charging port. Thunderbolt Display would not wake using either MacBook Thunderbolt port. Cinema Display (with DVI to Thunderbolt adapter) worked in both MacBook Thunderbolt ports.

I tried:

  • Resetting the NVRAM (no dice)
  • Repair Disk while booted into the recovery partition (no dice)
  • Repair Permissions (There was a permission repair to a detectDisplayd file. But the display would still not come on.)

When I opened About This Mac > System Report the display just came back on. (*magic*)

Maybe something about scanning the thunderbolt port reset/reestablished the display port connection? It's a really dumb fix, but it saved a trip to the Apple Store.

thunderbolt display won't wake up!
