Swipe with three fingers takes me to the next/previous photo. Why can't I use swipe with two fingers for this? Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. More often than not, it doesn't. It's annoying!

YAY! This solved my problem. Or, really, I should say that the reverse of this solved my problem.
Aperture➞Preferences➞General➞Enable Gestures" was indeed checked. I unchecked it and then set up Aperture specific 2 finger gestures in the amazing app Better Touch Tool (I set 2 finger swipes to trigger forward and back arrow keys).

I think Apple has set up 2 finger swipes for Aperture to be some sort of forward/back for photos you've viewed rather than forward/back through thr album you're in. For me, sometimes it worked but sometimes it didn't, and figuring out why was driving me nuts. Now, it's set the way I want it and it works every time.
Unless I'm missing something, I only see the option to turn swipe between pages off or switch it to three fingers. The problem is that swipe with 2 fingers works fine in other apps. I couldn't live without it in Safari. I'm only having trouble with 2 finger swipes in Aperture.
In my installation of Aperture, with no additional utilities for gestures, the 2-finger left/right swipe moves to the next or previous Image. It is in no way affected by whether or not you have recently viewed an Image. It works in the Viewer. It does not work in the Browser. It works for Projects and for Albums.
I don't know why it doesn't work this way for you -- but you might try disabling your utility and seeing if you can get Aperture to behave this way.

It works better with Better Touch Tool. I also set up 2 finger up/down swipes to trigger keyboard arrow up/down.
Better Touch Tool is such an improbvement if you're using a trackpad. You can assign all kinds of gestures to do so many different things. 2 finger swipes, 3 finger swipes, 4 finger swipes, and so many other kinds of gestures... either app specific or system wide. Aperture is the only app I've had to change 2 finger swipes with though, but I'm glad I fixed it.
Better Touch Tool can also assign keyboard hotkeys and even Apple Remote button presses (which is awesome!) I'm pretty sure the app is free, but the developer should be charging for it! BTT is an essential Mac App for me.
Try this:
Go to: Menu > System Preferences > Trackpad. Click on the More Gestures button at the top. You can modify the Swipe Between Pages gesture here.
2-fingered swipe to advance forward/backward while in the Viewer works for me. Have you checked "Aperture➞Preferences➞General➞Enable Gestures"?
