BUG - Mail 10.4.5 - POP access to Exchange-based server - Workaround

Hi folks, here's a workaround for a bug in Mail's POP access to a MS Exchange Server based mail server which has POP access enabled.

When you attempt to create the account you may get the error message:

"The POP server “192.168.1.3” is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the “Incoming Mail Server” field. If it still doesn’t respond, the server might be temporarily unavailable.
If you continue, you may not be able to receive any email."

The problem arose because since 10.4.5 (and possibly earlier versions of Tiger) the Mail app incorrectly assumes (at least for our server) that the server is using NTLM authentication, which it is not.

Workaround:
Hit the Continue button anyway. On the next screen (titled "Incoming Mail Security" make sure that Authentication is set to "Password". That's it.

This setting can also be accessed via the Advanced tabe of the Accounts dialog.

Important note
If the Authentication setting is left as "NTLM" then the Connection Doctor (Window menu) will incorrectly report that "Connection and login to server succeeded". You may be surprised to find that you will get this response whatever username and password you supply (this is another bug ...)
