Trackpad & USB mouse not working

I'm having problems clicking on the trackpad - I plugged in a USB mouse and this won't click either.

I have tried repairing disks, applied pressure evenly across pad, loosened the screw underneath, cleaned it, taken the battery out to check if it's swollen, re-installed Lion and all updates.

I've also retstarted holding shift-L, ctrl, opt. This allows the USB mouse to work for about an hour and then it stops again.

It just seems to have happened out of nowhere - although other peculiarities to note recently, are that iTunes started to open by itself and play the first song in the library, even after quitting, it would re-open.

Surely this is a software issue if the USB mouse won't work either? Could really do with some help here!!!😕

Have you tried to un-pair and re-pair your Track Pad ?

How do I add or remove a wireless device to or from my Mac (pairing or unpairing)?

Use the Bluetooth Setup Assistant to set up your device to work with your computer by “pairing” the device with your computer:

  • Find the Bluetooth icon User uploaded filein the menu bar in the upper-right of your display.
  • Choose Set up Bluetooth Device from the Bluetooth status menu.

If the Bluetooth status menu isn’t visible in your menu bar, use these steps to open the Bluetooth Setup Assistant:

  • Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu, then choose Bluetooth from the View menu.
  • Enable the "Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar" option.

Learn more about pairing your keyboard, mouse, or trackpad with your Mac.

After you pair a device with your computer, you should see the device listed in Bluetooth preferences.

Potential solution:

I've had this issue for a few days now. I have a Macbook Pro and a magic mouse and periodically throughout the day, the clicking function would randomly stop working. I tried everything. I even called Apple Support. I also pulled half my hair out of my head, but that didn't work either.

Finally, I discovered I forgot I had packed my extra magic mouse in my bag. It was on and engaged due to the weight of other contents stuffed in the bag. The bag was next to me all day at work, on the train, and at home. Since it too is paired with my computer, the constant click from the bag was overriding my track pad and other mouse. I turned it off and everything is working fine now!

Perhaps others suffering from this same issue are picking up signals from another paired mouse somehow?

Hope this helps.
