Compressor Stalls, won't finish job

I am using Compressor 4.0.4 on an iMac, OS X Mountain Lion, i7.

Every time I go to compress a 90 minute .mov file in Compressor (haven't tried other file types) on my home computer it goes all the way until it shows having about a minute left and then Compressor just stalls. It never gets to the point where it asks me to insert a blank DVD. I know the burner is okay because I can use Toast 11 to burn DVDs without problem.

I have virtually the same computer at work and Compressor 4.0.4 works fine. At home I tried reinstalling Compressor to no avail, tried trashing preferences, then followed an Apple support page where it said to trash the Apple Qmaster folder in Library/Application support, which i also did, still to no avail.

Please help...

Thanks for responding, Russ, much appreciated.

It creates the .m2v file and the .ac3 file on my HD, but it never gets to the point of making the .mov file, however, as that is where it stalls. Just FYI, I also tried repairing disc permissions. Nothing seems to work. This used to work fine. I am not sure if Mountain Lion is the culprit or not.

Any suggestions?

I suspect I have an incorrect understanding of what you're trying to do. I thought you were trying to use Compressor's Create DVD template and I was asking you whether hanging the output device to Hard Drive would make a difference in completing the job action.

So I'm puzzled when you say it creates the m2v and AC3, but not the mov file.

Although you've already done some of the things this tool does, my suggestion is to run DIgital Rebellion's Compressor Repair.

Good luck.

OK. Can you take a completely different source file, mark a short segment in the Preview window, select Hard Drive for output device and see whether it will complete the job action by making a disk image?

If that also hangs, I would uninstall Compressor again – using FCS Remover – to ensure that you get all the files related to C4. Download the app once more and immediately repair permissions in Disk Utility.

Thanks, Russ.

What I think may have happened is this:

Because my office computer has a much higher internet speed what I did before was I downloaded Compressor at my office then just put Compressor on a thumbdrive and loaded it on my home computer. This technique had worked before without a hitch before with FCPX and other updates. My issue with the home computer also is that when I go to download updates from the app store they will download and then often times not install for some reason. I am not sure if it is a setting on my computer or not.

I long for the days where you could just download a stand alone update, that way I could download jst once and put it on all of my computers.

At any rate, I followed your suggestion and used FCS Remover and I am now trying to download Compressor 4 from the appp store. I wonder if I am going to get 4.0 or 4.0.4? This could take quite a while, but when it is done downloading and installing (I hope) I will let you know how it went.

Would there be a way to download an update of Compressor on one computer and then gather all the downloaded components on a thumb drive and do a manual install on another computer?

Hi David, yes, the Compressor at my home and office were purchased under the same account.

To my horror, now my office computer is doing the same thing. Compressor just stalls when it gets to the burn stage. In the Share Monitor it says "waiting."

I guess I will try downloading Compressor at my office too (it is currently downloading at my house so I don't know the result of that yet).

Could there be a DVD driver that I need to update?

Hmm. A known ML issue…no support document…I'm skeptical. They have sold more than a few copies of ML…and more than a few of those users must be using FCPX and sharing to DVD. (Unless this is proof that DVD really is dead.) Yours is the only post I've seen on this. So not to doubt that you are experiencing a frustrating problem, but just to say I'm skeptical.

What part of Apple did you talk to?

If you have Toast, why not use it?

As to partitioning, I don't think I'd go there. While I have partitioned drives before, I don't have ML on my machines and I don't like to advise about things I haven't tried.

I have a contact who works with FCPX who helped me on a previous-very serious-issue.

Ok, so burning with Toast 11, I have 3 options:

A) Burn from the original .mov file by dragging it into Toast, then burn.

B) Copy a DVD that I had already burned using the DVD copy function of Toast.

C) use the 2 files created by my attempt to use Compressor (the mv2 file and the ac3 files) and load them in Toast.

Which will give me the best quality DVD?

Same problem here.

Brand new MBP i7 with ML, last updates, FCPX 10.0.5 and compressor 4.0.4 purchased from app store.

Compressor stall everytime, it's very fragile.

FCPX runs well, no problems, but when I try to export using compressor settings or using send to compressor, when I open compressor and try to mark chapters to make MPEG2 export (later for DVD), Compressor takes too much time and never ends.

It's very erratic, with small exports of videos very small (less than 1 minute), compressor stalls, the beach ball starts to move and never ends.

I think there are a real problem between compressor 4 and ML, something that Apple knows but there aren't a real and direct solution.

I think we need to open a Compressor BIG issues thread and report it to apple, we are paying for software that is not working, it looks worst than Microsoft.
