Can I add unknown words to a user dictionary?

A lot of works I type are seen as misspellings but are techical to my industry. Is there a way to add them to a user dictionary on iPad and iPhone to alleviate this?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4), 30" Display, 22" Cinema Display

I believe the ONLY way to get your ipad to recognise your words is to put them into your Contacts i.e. make each "special" word a new contact.

Yes. No need to add them to contacts.

It's not as simple as creating a list though.

Type the word.

When a suggestion pops up, tap the suggestion (to ignore it).

Do this a few times and it'll remember the word (and use it for suggestions).
