Frequently, PDF documents carry a rather unhelpful (and ugly looking) alphanumeric identifier. I would be incredibly grateful to learn how to rename my files.
Currently, I am using many many folders to circumvent the problem, I sure hope there is a solution to this :)

It depends upon the app that you are using for PDF documents. I use among others, Adobe Reader which includes the functionality to change the name. IBooks does not have that ability to change the name.

I use Goodreader which has an excellent file management system.
Thanks for the advice. I've loaded the Adobe Reader app, now I just need to work out how to rename the existing files I have in my iBooks library. I appreciate your assistance :) Cheers
1. Tap Edit
2. Select file to rename
3. Tap icon on left of Trash Bin to rename

I use iBooks. To change the name of a PDF I sync with my computer then change the name there. In iTunes on my computer I select Books, then select the PDF that I want to change, then select get info. I can change the name and the author. After I'm done I sync again and the changed name will appear on my iPad.
It definitely a work around but that's how I do it.
Email PDF files from iBook and Open in Adobe Reader.
Yes that works but what a waste of energy to do a simple task. A year ago I was able to do this in itunes but the new version does not allow it to happen. No thanks Apple!
I Just managed to rename a PDF within the latest version of iBooks. Here is what I did:
1. Select the pdf to rename.
2. Double tap on the existing pdf name.
3. Simply rename the pdf from there.
Hope this works for other people.
