Trouble with disc mode

I'm having trouble with putting my iPod in a disc mode. The logo appears when I'm pressing and holding menu and select buttons but then when I'm doing the same with select and play/pause the red X appears again. What is wrong?

If you are unable to get the iPod into Disk Mode to restore it and instead get the red X symbol, it's a very good indication of a damaged hard drive inside of your iPod. This means you'll need to take or send your iPod in for repair or replacement.
