Using Sony DSR-11 video deck to record from a VCR tape

Someone on here recommended a while back that I pick up this deck, which i did and it works great.

Now, I want to do something very basic with it, and I'm not sure how to do it.
I want to be able to record some old analog VCR tape onto it and be able to edit it into a digital tape.

None of the various configurations that I tried worked, in hookin the VCR up to the Sony.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I think this is taking me in the right direction, but I'm not there yet.
Now, at least I get a black screen that changes to solid grey for the section where I recorded, and then returns to black.

The input is set to S-Video and the EE is on (actually it says, DV EE OUT On (the other option being Off)
I've tried REC MODE in DVCAM and DV SP positions.

It seems as though there is some other very basic thing I'm overlooking, but I don't know what it is.

thanks a lot.

You want to record from your VHS to the DVCAM tapes, yes?
E to E isn't part of this equation.
There are two things you need to do. Determine there is a signal coming out of your VHS tape machine and that there is signal going into your DSR11. There are several things that can go wrong but you've got to determine signal integrity first.

Then you have to decide what to check next. Like the record button and the record lockout on the cassette.

When you figure this out, it's going to be really simple.
