Q: Wired and Wireless Internet Connection OS10.2.8

As previously mentioned, I still cannot connect to Time Warner cable on my PowerBook G4 running OS 10.2.8. It will not work either connecting an ethernet cable from the back of my laptop to the back of the Time Warner modem or to the back of my Belkin router designed for OS 10.5.8 (my currect MacBook). Also wireless connection is unavailable even though the PowerBook has this option. My understanding is that the newer high security settings on the Belkin will prevent wireless connection unless I lower the settings, which I am reluctant to do. One suggestion was to use the MaxPower 802.11 n/g/b wireless stick adapter w/extension cradle, however it specifies USB 2, which I don't think the PowerBook has. Any other ideas/suggestions appreciated......

Your Powerbook cannot use WPA unless you upgrade it to Panther or above. Even if you do, the original AirPort card that you have cannot run WPA2. You can use WEP but it is not considered secure. So, try disabling wireless security altogether.

As far as the Ethernet connection is concerned, try powering down the modem, then powering it back up again after you connect the Powerbook's Ethernet cable. Make sure you are using a cable known to be intact.

The only MaxPower 802.11b USB adapter with which I am familiar requires Tiger or later. USB 2.0 is probably not the limiting factor in your case.

    Hi John,

Only in the last week or two, OWC must have changed the model of that adaptor. The old one would work back to 10.3.9. The current specs say you now need OS 10.5.

I noticed the physical design of the cradel changed somewhat, so I think what you can get today is a newer model that, unfortunately, drops support for 10.3.and 10.4.

The one without the cradle and "n" support now requires Tiger:

Very interesting changes in just 3 months.

I bought the Maxpower b/g/n cradled model in late April and use it with my 1999 iBook clamshell successfully. It has OS X 10.3.9 installed and is coupled with a new Airport Extreme base station.

Previously the iBook worked with it's internal Airport 802.11 b card and an earlier Airport Extreme base station, but when I upgraded to the latest base station it of course ceased to function.

Looking at the recent OWC pictures there is a definite change in appearance.
