Mirroring Apple TV for mid 2010 MacBook Pro

I just called the only Apple Store in Indiana to find out more about the Apple TV. I was told tha only the late 2011 and newer Macs can use the Mirroring option. Can anyone help me on this one please!? I want to be able to use my mid-2010 MacBook Pro and Apple TV. Are there any other options?
