Welcome to the Apple Community.
Mirroring requires QuickSync, which is a technology built into CPU's from mid 2011 only. So there is no way theft will ever get mirroring to work on older devices.

Your computer is too old for Apple to support hardware Airplay.
By all means try airparrot and report back.

lol. smooth typing, guys.
airparrot is a $10 easy app i found when originally looking up info on 10.8 and airplay. airplay, according to AC, will never work and im pretty sure they're right after looking into it even more. but airparrot is essentially the same thing with perhaps a few more options for specialization based on the project. works great, too. a little lag on the tv's part, but even with running a couple giant applications, my computer itself didnt have an issue with lag and latency.
Good to hear it's working well for you.
There are mixed views on Airparrot, I downloaded it a few weeks ago but really haven't played with it too much - looked ok to me.
Ultimately, if it does the job well enough for you, it's better than no Airplay at all.
