Try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. To find that Library folder if you are using Lion/Mountain Lion, use Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart.

Next, make sure that you are not connected to the internet. Then go to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder and remove any files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Use the same method as listed above to get to the correct Library Folder. Log out/in, or restart and check iCal for functionality.

iCal has been "updating calendars" for a long time (not sure how long as left the computer unattended) but it ended solving my similar problem.

I read this and tried an even easier solution. Forced iCal to quit. Turned off wifi. Re-opened now inactive iCal. Deleted the offending calendar event. Restarted wifi. Bingo. All behaving beautifully.

I am using a MacAir, running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63), and I cannot find the folders you are referring to. I have searched and searched on Finder for the Library folders, according to the method you prescribed, and cannot find the 'option key' to depress. Please help!

I can find a 'Library' folder, containing a 'Preferences' folder, but it is located in 'Macintosh HD', not in 'Users'. Also, the 'Preferences' folder does not contain a file 'called com.apple.iCal.plist' (but does have many similarly worded ones, nor a 'Calendars' folder.

That's where I'm stuck. Would you mind explaining for me in a little more detail what that means please? Does it mean go to the 'Go' dropdown menu, when in Finder? If so, I cannot find any 'keys' there called "option".

You need to hold down the Option(alt) key while selecting the "Go" menu in finder. By holding down the Option key, the Library folder will become visible.

Thanks dmason 898, that's really helpful. One last thing now: all the calendar changes that I made in my MacAir whilst I was having the updating problem, are not being refelected on my iphone / ipad. New changes made in the MacAir are going through, and calendar changes in ipad / iphone are going through to the MacAir, but there is a backlog of disconnect between the MacAir and ipad / iphone calendars. How is it possible to resolve this? Thanks!
