How do I copy photos from a Mac to an external harddrive?

Connect the hard drive to the Mac and drag the folder of photos - or any individual photos - onto the hard drive icon on the desktop.

Didn't work. The ext hard drive is a passport. When I drag and try to drop it gives the circle with a line through it indicating the function can't be done

But ... did you format the drive for a Mac? Page 54 of the user manual - assuming that this is the correct hard drive - or a drive similar to this one.
