Swapping old Macbook hard drive into new one

Hi guys,

I just bought a new MBP 2012 and i already have my old MBP 2011. What i want to do is swap my MBP'11 Hard drive into the New MBP'12 edition. Is it possible to just physically swap the harddrive and boot up without having any issues? i think some driver issues will be a problem since the '11 edition has intel hd 3000 and '12 has 4000. Some of you guys might have already done this but im stumped. Any help is appreicaited

I see your point.

Backup everything first. Then swap the drives. You probably would have to reinstall OSX since your other machine's OSX, even if it's upgraded to Mountain Lion will probably not include the drivers for the new one.

With Windows, apart from diver issues, you would face licensing issues as well since your license is activated wiht Microsoft along with a signature of your hardware components. The new machine would have a different signature and Windows will catch that.

Too much trouble altogether. You might be better off with Migration Assistant and I'm sure Windows has similar tools.

The only way that you might be able to do that is to create a bootable USB flash drive using Mountain Lion 10.8.1 and creating it using Lion DiskMaker. You could - maybe - install your old drive into your new, boot with the USB drive and install Mountain Lion. Note that I don't know if this will work or not. But if you're willing to give it a try and you don't want to jump through hoops, it's the only thing that I can suggest.

If both Macbooks are running the same OS - you might get lucky by doing a straight swap to see if it works...

however, if you're running Lion in your current Macbook and the new one is running either factory installed Lion or Mountain Lion - might not work - retail Lion might not have the drivers for the 2012 Macbook...

give it a shot, if it works - then you're good to go.
