how to set up keyboards shortcuts

Most programs use the Mac default set for those functions -

Cut - Command-X

Copy - Command-C

Paste - Command-V

You can determine the keyboard shortcut for most actions by looking in the menus for the program. The shortcut is shown to the right of the menu item.

What are you trying to cut, copy, or paste?

Are you doing this in the Finder, as in trying to cut a file?

The Finder does not support using Command-X to cut a file. You can drag and drop the file to the new folder.

Or you can use Command-C to copy the file, Command-V to paste the copy in the new location, then select and delete the file in its original location (Shift-Delete)

That is correct, the Finder will not Cut a file. You copy the file, then you go back and delete the original after it has been successfully transferred.

You can delete the original after the transfer by selecting the file (single click on the file), then using Finder -> File -> Move to Trash. Or you can select the file, the use Command-Delete. Or you can drag the file to the trashcan on the Dock.

The file will be deleted when you empty your trashcan.

When you are transferring a file from one drive to another drive, there is a way to move it rather than to just copy it.

Hold down the Command key while dragging the file to the other drive. Finder will copy the file to the other drive, then will automatically delete the original on the source drive.
