Q: OSX mail server not working after upgrade to 10.8.1

I updated my mini-mac running OSX server to 10.8.1 and now I am having problems with the mail server.  It just stopped working.  I checked the log files and this is what it has returned:

Aug 28 09:24:40 limcoserver.limcoengineering.com postfix/trivial-rewrite[25261]: warning: harsh:/Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/virtual_domains: table lookup problem

Aug 28 09:24:40 limcoserver.limcoengineering.com postfix/trivial-rewrite[25261]: warning: virtual_alias_domains lookup failure

Aug 28 09:24:50 limcoserver.limcoengineering.com postfix/smtpd[25256]: warning: hash:/Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/smtpdreject: table lookup problem

Aug 28 09:26:28 limcoserver.limcoengineering.com postfix/postscreen[25317]: warning: cannot connect to service private/smtpd: Connection refused

The mail server log is reporting the following error

Aug 28 09:26:22 limcoserver.limcoengineering.com log[25134]: anvil: Warning: Killed with signal 15 (by pid=1 uid=0 code=unknown 0)

Aug 28 09:26:22 limcoserver.limcoengineering.com log[25134]: imap-login: Warning: Killed with signal 15 (by pid=1 uid=0 code=unknown 0)

Aug 28 09:26:22 limcoserver.limcoengineering.com log[25134]: auth: Warning: Killed with signal 15 (by pid=1 uid=0 code=unknown 0)

Aug 28 09:26:22 limcoserver.limcoengineering.com log[25134]: log: Warning: Killed with signal 15 (by pid=1 uid=0 code=unknown 0)

Aug 28 09:26:22 limcoserver.limcoengineering.com push_notify[24372]: terminating mail notification services (SIGTERM)

From the look it seems like the database table maybe corrupted, and I would like to find out how if anyone has this problem.  It seems like eveytime there is an update on ML, there is some resultant problems with one or more of the services on OSX server.

    This problem did not occur when upgrading for me, but how is the listing in the Server application's Mail section when you click "Edit..." next to "provide mail for"?

    The file /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/virtual_domains doesn't contact a great deal of information by the way, so you can edit that file by entering the following into terminal:

    sudo nano Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/virtual_domains

    And when that file turns up empty add the following, press cmd + x, y and enter.

    # This file is auto-generated by the Server Admin:Mail

    # backend plugin whenever mail settings are saved.

    #

    # *** Please do not edit. ***

    #

    # Last modified on: 2012-07-28 10:34:16 +0000

    Hope this helps.

    Mark 23,

    I checked beside the edit button for "provide mail for" and it is stating that it is providing mail for my domain.  I do not have any virtual domains, so I take it then that my virtual_domain file should be empy.

    I think your problem has nothing to do with the problem curriebwol is having.

    You have a problem on the client side, while curiebwol has a problem with server.

    Might I suggest posting a question in the following forum:

    Your domain has been blacklisted by the RATS-Dyna blacklist.

    RATS-Dyna - Probable PC or home connection infected with a Trojan, Bot, or Emailer Program -- If you are listed in the Spamrats / RATS-Dyna blacklist and you operate your own mail-server, you likely have no valid PTR-Record. If you are simply a home email user, you have a dynamic IP Address and may need to contact your ISP for assistance. If you operate a domain name and are using your ISP for SMTP-Authentication, try contacting your DNS Provider to use their SMTP-Services instead.

    When you are blacklisted, which you are, your mail might not arrive and you might not be able to send mail...

    When you open /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/main.cf and scroll al the way down, you'll see the configuration like you have see in your previous post.

    change the line that reads:

    virtual_alias_maps = harsh:/Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/virtual_domains

    to

    virtual_alias_maps = $virtual_maps

    And restart the mail server.

    Mark23,

    That maybe so, but the mail server was working after updating from OSX 10.7 to 10.8, with the exception of the problem I had with outlook clients.  I got over that problem since it had to do with the non-fqdn reject in the main.cf file.  The problem resurfaced again when I upgraded to osx 10.8.1.  This time it even took down my apple mail client, and the outlook.

    I think I may know the reason why my mail server maybe backlisted and that is because of the reverse domain name look up.  On the reverse it is pointing to my adsl ISP.  I am using ADSL with static IP addresses.

    In the same file as mentioned above add the following after smtpd_helo_required = yes:

    smtpd_helo_restrictions = reject_invalid_helo_hostname

    After readme_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix add:

    recipient_canonical_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/system_user_maps

    Please remove the following empty variable:

    local_recipient_maps =

    And restart your mail server from the server application by switching it off and on again.

    Mark23,

    I do have virtual_alias_maps = $virtual_maps in my main.cf file.  I think the problem could be that the server is getting confused as to which main.cf file to use, that is there is one in the /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix directory and one in the /etc/postfix directory.  I am wondering if I renamed the latter one, that will work?  I am going to try.

    OS X ignores that file since the server application is installed if I recall correctly, so there is no need to rename it, there is no harm done either if you do

    Mark 23,

    Can you confirm which directory postfix in 10.8.1 uses?  I have renamed the main.cf file in /etc/postfix and now the log is giving me a fatal error message

    Hmmm, it seems like I was wrong, either that or I've altered two files.. I'd change the file back to it's original name anyhow.....
